WPS lets its hair down for Christmas
Members enjoyed a new Christmas Party option this year, switching from "beer and skittles" to the rather more hi-tech Ten Pin variety at the Megabowl in Maidenhead. As with our photography, we welcomed beginners and experienced bowlers, as the diverity of scores testified! A good time was had by all, both at the lanes and in the bar afterwards.

The WPS Christmas Card
As last year, the WPS has produced its own Christmas card, which has been sent to all speakers and judges that have either already visited us since September, or will do so during the remainder of the club year to June 2007. This is just an additional small 'thank you' from the club for the valuable time they give up to come and talk to us, and helps to ensure continuing good relations with them all.
The card design is the mural that we produced for the Windsor Fringe Festival in September, comprising works contributed by members which were skilfully put together as a three-dimensional display by member Derek Reay (see item below). The image was printed, and the cards created, by member Paul Mitchell (our thanks to you, Paul).

Opening of the WPS contribution to the Windsor Fringe 2006 - 24 September 2006
The WPS contribution to the Windsor Fringe Festival was formally opened on Sunday 24 September, at the doctors' surgery in Sheet Street, Windsor. The photographic feature, conceived and constructed by WPS member Derek Reay, is entitled 'Off the Wall'; this aptly describes the construction with some 70 images mounted at different distances from the wall - the effect is very striking. The photographs have been supplied by our members, so the work represents both the breadth of style and depth of expertise within the club. Our thanks to all of the 21 members who contributed, and particularly to Derek for making it all happen.

Tuition Session "Seeing in Black & White", led by Micki Aston, 22 April 2006
Micki says " We all enjoyed a day out visiting various locations local to my area, taking a break for a delicious carvery lunch in a local pub.  I have seen some of the shots resulting from that day out, and I am very impressed.  Clearly the members who signed up for that have a feel for, and an eye for, shooting in mono."

This photo was taken at Harefield Lock in Harefield.

Windsor Fringe 05: WPS contribution
The Windsor Photographic Society's contribution to the Windsor Fringe Festival is now firmly established. This year we have based our 3.3m wide display on a cartoon showing the activities of some of our members at a typical club evening. Lots of activity, lots of fun, and hopefully bringing a smile to the faces of those who stop to look.
The display is in the waiting room of the Medical Practice in Sheet Street, Windsor, where we hope it will remain until this time next year. The display was designed by Derek Reay and drawn by his daughter Christina. The photographs were taken by club members and sponsored by Snappy Snaps of Windsor.

Windsor acquires its own digital projector
Windsor continues to widen its appeal to a broad spectrum of photographers, comprehensively supporting both traditional and digital image-making techniques. To further our support in the digital field, we are proud to announce our purchase of a new digital projector.

We see this serving the club on several fronts:

  • Tuition to the whole club, in addition to our small group sessions, on digitally-related topics
  • Demonstrations of image enhancement and manipulation via PC
  • Digital competitions - internal, and also possibly inter-club or Internet-based
  • Instant image feedback on practical sessions and workshops
For those technically minded, the projector is an NEC LT-245. It has XGA resolution (1024 x 768 native), using DLP technology. It has an output of 2,200 ANSI lumens, and a specified contrast ratio of 2,000:1. Input options, as well as PCs, laptops, and video sources, include images stored on PC cards and USB solid state drives. The projector can even be operated over a wireless LAN, and offers several security options to protect the asset.
The purchase was made possible by a combination of factors. We have had several good years in terms of membership numbers, and therefore in subscription income. But the purchase of a quality projector, to do justice to our members' images, was only made possible by the generosity of many of our members who responded to a call for pledges to contribute to the purchase. Nearly £600 was raised in this way, a tribute to the collective enthusiasm of our members; our thanks to all of them.

B&W Field Trip - part of the WPS tuition series
A group of 13 members led by Chairman Micki Aston took part in a B/W tuition session in Burnham Beeches.  The focus of the session was 'Seeing in Black and White'.  After spending several hours in The Beeches, photographing the various sights, including some of the oldest trees in Britain, the group dispersed agreeing that the tutorial had indeed helped them to isolate shape, form and texture in a scene.  Since it was so well received, the club will be organising more tutorials in this vein during the coming season.

Disappointment for Windsor at the CACC Rose Bowl final
The CACC Rose Bowl finals were held last Sunday - and sadly Windsor didn't do as well as we'd hoped. Amersham won with 143 points, and we came 8th equal, with 121 points.
Our slides were scored as follows:

"Zodiacs crossing" Micki Aston 16
"Relaxing" Jenny Downing 12
"Springboks in Long Grass" David Wessely 17
"In the Spotlight" Alan Cross 18
"Apple of my Eye" Lauren Poussard 15
"Autumnal colours" Micki Aston 13
"Dawn riders" Alan Carrick 15
"Liliac Breasted Roller" David Wessely 15

Windsor through to CACC Rose Bowl final!
Lauren Poussard, our External Competition Secretary, has given us this report on the third round of the CACC Rose Bowl competition ...

"We came in THIRD place on Tuesday night [8 February]. We were competing against Harrow C.C., Kodak Works P.S. and Chesham C.C. The competition was really between Chesham and ourselves all night, as we passed each other back and forth with every image... in the end they edged past by just ONE.
"Harrow had a fantastic portfolio - their average score was 18.7 and they won the competition by , 20 points. On a positive note however we did get two 20-pointers, David Wessely's "Springboks in Long Grass" and my "Apple of My Eye". "Apple of my eye" got a star.
"Jenny King announced at the end of the night that Windsor and Harrow both make it through to the Rosebowl Final in April, which is good news for us again, and I will be reviewing our panel once again with the 'team' (David and Micki) to make sure our panel is even better then it is now. There are a couple that have not done so well in the last 2 rounds, so I will be looking to try something new for the final. If anyone has some outstanding slides they would like to submit for the final, let me know!"

Final Results for Round Three:
Harrow C.C. 280
Chesham C.C. 261
Windsor P.S. 260
Kodak Works P.S. 243

Windsor win Round 2 of CACC Rose Bowl!
Round Two of the 'CACC Rose Bowl' competition was held on Monday 17th January, hosted by ourselves. Participating in Round Two were Windsor P.S., Chalfont & Gerrards Cross C.C., and Park Street C.C. Maidenhead C.C. were scheduled to compete, but withdrew.
Each club was allowed 15 slides, for a total of 45 on the night, ably judged by Stan McCartin.
After a keenly fought battle, in which the tension was maintained with several slides held back, Windsor came out on top! The two slides of the evening that were awarded 20 points were both from Windsor - Micki Aston's "Zodiacs crossing", and Lauren Poussard's "Apple of my eye". The competition rules allow just two of the top scorers to receive a 'star' rating - and these went naturally to the two Windsor entries!
We now go through to the third round, against tough opposition from Kodak Works, Chesham and Harrow in Febuary (date as yet unkown).
Final Results for Round Two:
Windsor P.S. 256
Chalfont & Gerrards Cross C.C. 250
Park Street C.C. 231
